It is located in San Blas and surrounds a stunning spring. At La Tovara National Park’s various encounters, you can plunge yourself into nature as you weave your way among the mangroves.

To get the most out of a visit to La Tovara National Park, many people find it handy to learn a little about the place before heading out.

What Will You Find in La Tovara National Park?

The following are some of the more fascinating features of this national park that are good to know before you make your visit. This gives you the chance to appreciate what you’re seeing much more profoundly than you would otherwise.

Fresh spring water meets salty seawater

The unique position of La Tovara brings fresh spring water down from the mountains until it flows into the ocean’s salt water in an astounding estuary. There, thousands of fish, bird and reptile species have found a perfect habitat, including the Camalota Lagoon’s crystal clear waters.

Boat trips

If you’re interested in heading out on the waters in La Tovara, you have a choice between a short trip on the water or a long one. The short one departs from the El Conchal jetty and lasts around an hour and a half to two hours. On the other hand, the longer trip leaves from the La Aguida jetty and lasts from 3 to 4 hours. The latter trip brings you through the mangrove estuary until it brings you to the Kiekari Crocodile Preserve.

Crocodile preserve

Incredible crocodiles have made a happy home in the La Tovara waters. These reptiles find this to be an ideal habitat, with comfortable temperatures and ample food. The Kiekari Crocodile Preserve helps to make sure these reptiles continue to enjoy their environment and is a stop that should not be missed. It is a great chance to learn more about these ancient creatures while seeing them firsthand.

Film set location

A fascinating tour of the national park that starts from La Aguada jetty gives you the chance to have a look at the set of “Cabeza de Vaca,” a popular Mexican movie filmed back in 1991. The set is nestled into the natural vegetation, providing the backdrop for Don Nuno de Guzman’s mythical adventures. Don Nuno de Guzman and his partner, Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca, are the founders of San Blas.

RAMSAR Convention

La Tovara National Park’s ecological wonders have earned it the honor of inclusion on “The List of Wetlands of International Importance.” It received that title in 2008 at the RAMSAR Convention which encourages conservation and respectful wetlands use via national, regional and local action.
